Correction of
dentofacial deformities should address both function and aesthetics. Often, besides correcting their occlusion patient
may ask for other adjunctive procedures such as rhinoplasty or genioplasty to
correct their nasal and genial deformities.
Although
nasal and genial aesthetic deformities can be corrected simultaneously with the
skeletal deformities to achieve a more attractive profile, or better symmetry; the
oral and maxillofacial surgeon quite often, is more inclined to perform
genioplasty with bimaxillary osteotomies and not rhinoplasty. This is because
there are several factors that must be taken into careful consideration during
surgery. These include intubation, maxillary swelling and nasal morphological
changes after Lefort I osteotomies.
There is also a
paucity of reports on simultaneous rhinoplasty and orthognathic surgeries for the
Asian patients. This talk discusses the common techniques that can be employed
when performing simultaneous rhinoplasty for the orthognathic patient as well
as the risks and benefits when performing both surgeries together.
Careful planning
for the surgery is essential to getting a favourable outcome.
