Orthognathic surgery can significantly improve the
quality of life of the patients with dentofacial deformities by correcting
functions and improving facial aesthetics. Detailed planning and surgical
execution of the plan are equally important to achieve these goals. Considerations
are made in every case to balance functional and aesthetic improvements as well
as biological limitations, short /long term morbidities and stability. Orthognathic
patients in Taiwan and Hong Kong share some unique dentofacial characteristics
which may also be common in the Southern China and Southeast Asia regions. This
lecture aims to share the experience from a major orthognathic center in Hong
Kong on the planning and surgical challenges in orthognathic surgery.
