Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders:
Past, Present, and Prospect
We all know that over 90% of the
temporomandibular disorders are from malocclusion, include para-function, teeth
loss, and nocturnal bruxism. Restoring the harmonic occlusion and preventing occlusal
trauma are the main strategy in the past, in the present, and even in the
future. But how we face the deteriorated temporomandibular joint? Do we wait
for the physiological remodeling after occlusion correction, or do we do the
operation to set everything in their proper position? That’s the way we did in
the past and in present. Is there any possibility for us to modify the inner
space of the TM joints? It’s the way we are walking and the future we are
exploring!
Through reviewing of the keystone articles,
clinical cases, and basic researches, let’s see how much the oral and
maxillofacial surgeons can do for the treatment of the temporomandibular
disorders in the near future.
