Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders:
Past, Present, and Prospect






We all know that over 90% of the temporomandibular disorders are from malocclusion, include para-function, teeth loss, and nocturnal bruxism. Restoring the harmonic occlusion and preventing occlusal trauma are the main strategy in the past, in the present, and even in the future. But how we face the deteriorated temporomandibular joint? Do we wait for the physiological remodeling after occlusion correction, or do we do the operation to set everything in their proper position? That’s the way we did in the past and in present. Is there any possibility for us to modify the inner space of the TM joints? It’s the way we are walking and the future we are exploring!

Through reviewing of the keystone articles, clinical cases, and basic researches, let’s see how much the oral and maxillofacial surgeons can do for the treatment of the temporomandibular disorders in the near future.
