Piezoelectric Surgery in Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr Paili CHEN 陳百立醫師

The piezoelectric surgery has been used in oral and maxillofacial surgery  and dental implantology for more than two decades. Recent publications have also shown their application in craniofacial surgery , ophthalmology  , neurology and plastic surgery . The key features of piezoelectric surgery include the selective cutting of bone without damaging the adjacent soft tissue,  clear visibility in operative  field and better osseous response. The cutting efficiency of the piezoelectric device improved a lot after over modulation being applied. The cutting characteristics of piezoelectric devices depend on the design of the insert being used , the pressure being applied on the handpiece and the speed of movement  during usage. All the users must know these factors and adapt their surgical technique in order to utilize the advantages of the piezoelectric surgery .

This presentation focuses on the application of piezoelectric surgery and shows their advantages over the traditional rotatory bone cutting devices in  outpatient settings. The limitation and disadvantage  in utilizing  the piezoelectric surgery in all hard tissue cutting procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery also will be discussed.
